Bridge The Gap – Journal

I’ve been continuing my work on Human Cargo this week – I thought today that this is the first time in a looong time that I have been consistently working on a single project.

Which is funny, because I had encouraged myself to log what I had been working on to shed light on how inconsistent I am, and how often I tend to switch gears and work on different things.

I had even only started work on Human Cargo to do something briefly before I continued with the novelisation of my four-part comic book series Space Precinct Zero.

I enjoyed heading into town for a coffee and a little write with my suddenly-growing fountain pen collection. I’ve filled a nice chunk (and still growing, hopefully!) in my notebook and even had to cut one session short because I ran out of ink!

As for today: I’m looking into bridging some gaps between my notes. I write the bulk of a scene but not always how we get there from the previous, and I’ll usually need to return at a later date to connect everything together. For one of these bridges, I was describing the Primary Centre of Hundred Worlds. This is the headquarters of Leader Royal Svikari’s sect. Cult. Group. Organisation.

The Primary is located on one of the Two Continents on Earth, which is all that remains after multiple natural disasters and so on. I haven’t actually named them yet, but the Space Corps Headquarters we visit at the start of Space Precinct Zero is situated in New Manchester.

Which, will now make me confirm that both projects are in the same world. Everything I write is in the DOMAVerse, after all …

Most areas of the Two Continents are built up due to there not being enough room for everyone, and so my original image of the Centre being part of a compound with everything to help them be self-sufficient (farm land and such) just wouldn’t be feasible.

The idea remains the same, but it will be more claustrophobic, urban and technological. A large indoor farm. Floor, table, ceiling and walls potentially housing plantable areas. Artificial lighting and watering systems.

And a huge warehouse/hangar where the Hundred Worlds have hired independent contractors to assist in the building of their spacecraft.

The Primary Centre was to host the celebrations and residents from all of the other centres were starting to trickle in ahead of the Grand Opening Ceremony.

Royal was standing upon the staging that had been constructed for the ceremonies. It was situated on the ground at the foot of the primary embarkation ramp to the Sorbernash, which sat where it was built in the hangar. The hangar itself had been a crowning achievement in the history of Royal Svikari and his Hundred Worlds. It had been the selling point of his preachings for many years. It showed that he and his faithful were proactive in travelling into the further reaches of space and that their ambitions were in fact genuine. He wasn’t just preaching. He wasn’t a con artist as many would have had you believe. He was building a hangar. So that he could build the vessel. So they could take their wondrous voyage.

Inspecting the lighting, making sure everything was just right. Looked up and around at the viewing platforms halfway up the outer walls of the hanger. The walkways that led to other entry points on the Sorbernash. sees Utnytter.

Here I’m bridging the gap between the introduction where me meet Captain Brendan Utnytter and him having a short conversation with Royal Svikari. From there, Utnytter will be meeting with a representative of Continents Technologies: ConTech aboard the Sorbernash, where he comes to discover that he isn’t needed in order for the vessel to be operational.

The last bit is still in note form, and I’ll be aiming to show Royal relishing the opportunity to have his audience. To make sure he’s cast in the light he deserves.

A little bit of work to go here and then the next gap to bridge will be Utnytter leaving Royal to his own preparations to consult the ConTech Rep aboard the Sorbernash.

Which should leave me with a finished first chapter.
