Back to the coffee shop and I’m writing about the switch over to the Janitor. How he takes it initially. He suddenly has to think, which is something that he hasn’t had to do for a long time. His entire role has changed in the blink of an eye; from lifelong custodian to … Captain. So it’ll take some getting used to for him and he’ll no doubt revert to the training he undertook as a child. It’s hard to override a life’s worth of work and training and the expectation that it will be the only thing he’ll ever do. He’s also entered and left stasis in a short period of time, so perhaps this also has an effect on his demeanor and mental health. These are all things that I’m exploring as I work through this part of the book. 

I’m also thinking about what happens next, which I’ll explore more deeply through the week. So far he’s had his meeting with Utnytter and has been left alone on the ship. He has absently returned to his cleaning duties and suddenly realises this isn’t his job anymore. And he’s gone off to the command deck.

Here, he’ll run into one of the maintenance droids that will help to make things clearer for him, and us.
