SPZ Cosplay DIY Part Three

We left Part Two with only the epaulettes and officer pips to go on the CSI Reiziger uniform, torn right from the pages of Space Precinct Zero. As with Part Two and the shoulder badges, I had originally intended to make my own epaulettes and pips. In a twist brand new to Part Three, I actually DID make my own epaulettes and pips.

But they were shit.

See. Shit.

I took measurements of the shoulder straps on the shirt and cut two tapered strips. I sewed them on top of each other. I didn’t bother turning them inside out to hide the edges, though I probably should have done. I preferred the flatter look of the two pieces laying…well, flatter. The pips themselves were just cut from a white fabric.

Each diamond was made thicker by gluing two layers together, so they’d be more raised from the epaulette. I’m quite sure I did the gluing before the cutting, but I wouldn’t put it past me to be stupid enough to have cut the diamonds and then had to mess about gluing them together.

However, getting all the diamonds (three for each shoulder) to be a consistent size and shape was always going to be difficult and I wasn’t happy with how they turned out.

On top of that, no matter what I seemed to do, the edges of everything all seemed to insist on fraying. A popular fix online was clear nail polish, which I used and was ultimately disappointed with. These were left as is until now, when I decided to Hell with them, I was going to replace them!

So I returned to Etsy (my new favourite place) and found plain black epaulettes. Then I remained on Etsy and found a great little store that produced vinyl transfers. I put in a custom order for the diamond pips design and was very pleasantly surprised by the results when I came to iron them on.

vinyl transfers: before
vinyl transfers: after

So basically, to make this uniform (and all three parts of this blog pointless), I bought a uniform and a load of stuff off Etsy, and stuck it all together.

End.

Thanks for reading, I appreciate you
